Take a guess right now… What is better? Chewing gum or eating chocolate? Click above to watch my latest video and find out or continue reading, if you prefer.
Tammy Stewart here at Health for a Purpose. What’s better…chewing gum or chocolate?
I figured that I needed to share this video because most people think chewing gum is better, right? So I’m going to tell you the problem with chewing gum, but I didn’t just want to give you bad news, so I decided to talk about chocolate too, to give you some good news.
So here’s the problem with chewing gum. First of all, most of them have a lot of bad ingredients. This one is made with Xylitol. So if you’re going to chew gum, this is probably the best one.
But Xylitol kills too many of the good bacteria in your mouth. You need about 85% good 15% bad organisms in you and ON you. Those good bacteria in your mouth protect you from the bad ones. They mineralize your teeth; they make your teeth stronger. They protect you against plaque so you need some of those good things and I just realized I should share with you the kind of toothpaste we use.
Revitin! This is the only one I know of that is specifically designed for your oral microbiome, to feed the good guys and not kill too many of them. Xylitol will kill too many of the good bacteria in your mouth, those good guys that you need.
Now if you’re going to start using Revitin Toothpaste, it’s actually an oral pro-biotic supplement, but if you’re going to start using it, give it a week or two because your teeth will feel different. That clean feeling that you think is clean from regular toothpaste, is actually stripping all the good stuff out of your mouth. Now that was an extra, I did not even plan to talk about that.
So…chewing gum. Most of them have sugar in them if you’re lucky. Sugar is not good but it’s better than the chemical substitutes that most chewing gum companies use; so Xylitol is the least bad.
However think about this, when are you supposed to chew? When you start chewing, what does your body expect? What does your stomach think is going to happen? Your stomach prepares for food, right? So it starts releasing all of those enzymes to break down the food that it thinks it’s about to get, but you’re not giving it food you’re just chewing and chewing and chewing and chewing.
Whooo… lot’s of stomach acid going on there, friend that is not a good thing! Not a healthy situation. That’s the biggest problem with chewing gum. So…when do you chew gum? Maybe you want to freshen your breath? Maybe you want Peppermint!
Hey I’ve got a couple of great options for you. I use Doterra Essential Oils, because I believe they are very pure AND therapeutic. Those are two separate things. Therapeutic is not always pure! They’re not the same.
So…straight peppermint oil in your mouth? Whooo… talk about hot lips! That’s going to burn your mouth. Doterra also has some little Peppermint Beadlets, tiny little beads so that you can actually get them in your mouth without burning your lips. And then when it dissolves or when you chew it, it’s like this burst of peppermint. If you have a headache, wow, this is the solution!
Here’s my favorite thing. Take your chocolate. We’re going to talk about chocolate in a second. Take your chocolate, put some chocolate in your mouth then put a drop of peppermint in. Nice! Better than chewing gum any day, except that I dripped it on my chin, now I’m going to have a hot chin.
So…peppermint with chocolate! Let’s talk about chocolate. I have a variety here, because my husband and I have sacrificed ourselves to go on a hunt for you, for the best chocolate.
Remember the philosophy of, ‘Food by God for the body by God.’ God made Cacao Beans. It comes off of a plant, it’s a vegetable right? It’s not a vegetable but you can pretend it is; it’s like a salad! LOL
You should eat chocolate but what you need to avoid are the sweeteners. Now if you’ve ever eaten a hundred percent chocolate there is not much pleasure in that. It’s very strong. If you get really high quality then it’s not as bitter. If you buy a 100 percent chocolate bar, you could melt it yourself, put some vanilla in it, some Stevia, and a tiny little bit of salt.
Food scientists teach me that salt softens some of the strong bitterness of the chocolate. Melt that together and then make your own individual chocolate candies. I’m not going to do that. I’m going to keep buying them until I find one that’s ready to open and eat 🙂
This one is 100 percent chocolate from, Primal brand. It does have Cocoa Butter in it. You will much prefer the texture if it has cocoa butter in it. That’s just the fat from the cocoa beans, perfectly healthy. It just changes the texture. If you buy one that’s just straight 100 percent chocolate and that’s the only ingredient, it’s going to be very dry and hard.
So this one has cocoa butter, shredded coconut and vanilla. That’s a pretty good start. This is a hundred percent chocolate. This one’s 85% Cacao. Cacao is less processed than cocoa. If you have a choice you should choose Cacao.
This one does have cocoa butter, a little bit of cane sugar and it is organic so that sugar is acceptable in very small quantities, and vanilla bean. I haven’t tried this one yet. I should do it right now, right? This one is going to be really good because it’s not quite as strong of a chocolate.
This one is fabulous, one of my favorites. I got it at Thrive Market, so you’re going to save a lot of money just shopping on Thrive. Ingredients: bittersweet chocolate which is chocolate liquor, sugar and vanilla. It’s very smooth, it has just the right amount of sweetness without being really bitter, and it’s individually packaged.
So if you want some peppermint put the chocolate in your mouth get your peppermint and that’s better than chewing gum.
I hope that this was helpful to you maybe even a little bit entertaining. Please share with your friends because they’re wondering the same things. I hope you have a great day full of flavor!
