5 Types of Safe Non-Toxic Cookware Ideal for Healthy Cooking

 

When it comes to evaluating a safe, non-toxic cookware option for yourself or your family there is one thing to keep in mind – QUALITY MATTERS. Like nutrition, cookware is not an aspect of your life that you want to skimp on. Low-quality cookware options may feel easier on your wallet, however, your health will ultimately pay the price.

Stoneware

When it comes to baking, you will not find an option that out-performs a well-seasoned stoneware pan. Made from clay, stoneware is durable, easy to care for, and safe to use at high temps in the oven. Because it is such a wonderful heat conductor, you can trust that your baked goods will be evenly cooked.

Glass or Glazed Ceramic Bakeware

A budget-friendly baking option is a glass or glazed ceramic cookware. When it comes to glass and ceramic cookware, quality absolutely matters. You need to be sure that the brand you purchase does not add toxic fillers to the glass when manufacturing. They are easy to use, easy to care for and because of the low price point, it is easy to accumulate a variety of shapes and sizes. The main downside is their durability. Depending on the brand, drastic temperature changes, like going from fridge to oven, are not feasible and could cause your dish to crack or burst. Use care when using glass dishes and always be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for temperatures and use.

Cast Iron

Cast Iron is a wonderful option for stovetop cooking and baking, alike. The brand that we recommend is Lodge Cast Iron, which can be found at several retailers and is very affordable. Because of its make-up, it conducts heat very evenly when properly preheated making it ideal for searing and cooking meats, roasting veggies, or baking biscuits, bread, and desserts. While Cast Iron is higher maintenance when it comes to washing and storing, it is durable enough to go from stove to oven and can even be used under a broiler. Enameled cast iron dutch ovens are wonderful for soups, stews, and bone broths. Cast iron can be a pricier option to consider, however, keep in mind that these are typically heirloom pieces, meaning that with proper care they can and will last for generations. One thing to note with cast iron is to be mindful when cooking highly acidic foods,  like tomatoes. Long exposure to highly acidic foods can cause cast iron to leach high levels of iron and even lead into your food, which will have negative effects on your health.

Ceramic Cookware

Last, but certainly not least, I want to mention Ceramic Coated cookware. This category of cookware can be tricky because, again, QUALITY MATTERS. When researching different brands, it is important to know what is UNDER that ceramic coating and what the ceramic coating may contain. Ceramic coatings are generally considered safe, however, depending on the brand they could contain less than ideal ingredients like lead that can leach into food if the coating chips. In addition to that, some brands have aluminum cores, which can leach into food through any chips in the coating. In general, a quality ceramic cookware brand will be durable and easy to clean, however, it is important to make sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommended care to make sure that your cookware lasts.
